The Grave of Pál Felsőbüki Nagy
Pál Felsőbüki Nagy (1777‒1857) was a politician, a judge of the Court of Appeal, one of the founders of the Hungarian Learned Society (later the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), a member of parliament, one of the intellectual leaders of the Hungarian Reform Era generation and one of the best-known public figures of Bük. He was born on 28 September 1777, in the Fertőszentmiklós domain of the family. Pál Nagy was an acclaimed eloquent speaker renowned for his talent during his parliamentary years and all through his political career. He was a spokesman for serfs against abuses by landlords, protected the common people from rising burdens of taxation, and tried to protect the rights of county estates from the bureaucratic system. He especially advocated the Hungarian language and nationality. He died in Vienna on 26 March 1857, at the age of 80. He was repatriated to Bük where he was buried by parson János Kemp on 29 March. His grave has been included in the National Inventory of Graves (Nemzeti Sírkert) since 2007.
A street and a school in the town were named after Pál Felsőbüki Nagy, the family’s mansion located at Nagy Pál utca 17. is also known as the Felsőbüki mansion. The mansion was renovated between 1983 and 1985 and operated under the name Kúria Étterem és Panzió (Mansion Restaurant and Guesthouse).
